If your job involves maintaining, servicing, repairing, or disposing of equipment that contains refrigerants, you’re required to be EPA certified under Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act. This certification ensures refrigerants are handled safely and legally. Specific HVAC jobs may require only one certification type (Type I, II, or III) or all three, known as EPA 608 Universal Certification.

 

Type I certification is required for servicing small appliances. It’s ideal for technicians working on refrigerators, freezers, and window AC units containing five pounds or less of refrigerant, commonly found in residential and light commercial settings.

Type II certification is required for servicing or disposing of high-pressure appliances. This includes systems like rooftop units and supermarket refrigeration, where technicians must follow strict procedures to prevent leaks and ensure safe refrigerant recovery.

Type III certification is required for servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances. It’s especially relevant for facilities professionals and HVAC technicians working with chillers in commercial buildings, hospitals, or industrial plants, where safety and system integrity are critical.

Universal certification allows technicians to service all appliances. It’s the most versatile option for professionals seeking to maximize job opportunities and ensure full compliance across a variety of equipment types and refrigerant systems.

Each certification type includes the required core curriculum, which covers essential EPA regulations, safety practices, and refrigerant handling fundamentals.

Courses are $150 for Type I, II, or III certification and $175 for Universal certification through ConSol/CHEERS. Both packages include EPA 608 core curriculum, an EPA 608 practice exam, a downloadable EPA 608 study guide, and the three attempts for the online proctored EPA exam. For those choosing a test-only package, EPA 608 test cost is $85.

No. The course is self-paced — take as much time as you need. Accounts that are inactive for more than 90 days will be deactivated. You’ll need to email us to reactivate your account.

Yes. You can take the exam online using a desktop or laptop with a webcam. You cannot take the exam on a tablet or phone.

It’s an online test taken on your computer while being monitored via webcam to ensure fairness and prevent cheating. This allows you the flexibility to take the exam remotely while maintaining the integrity of the test.

Each EPA 608 test includes 25 multiple-choice questions from each section required for your certification of choice.

‍For example, the Type I exam includes 25 questions from the Core section and 25 questions from the Type I section for a total of 50 questions. The Universal exam will include 25 questions from each of the four sections for a total of 100 questions.

A passing score of 70% is required to earn your EPA 608 certification.

The Type I exam is open-book, and you are allowed to use notes.

The Type II, III, and Universal exams are closed-book exams, and you cannot use notes.

You will see your score immediately after completing the exam. However, the final Pass/Fail status will be determined once a CHEERS employee reviews your proctored exam video. Results and your certificate will be sent to you via email.

No. Once you’ve passed your EPA 608 certification test online and received certification, you don’t have to recertify.

After we review your online exam and proctored session, your digital card will be emailed to you immediately. Your physical card will follow by mail; please allow up to 2 weeks for delivery.
